OBD-II fault code

P2C69: Drive Motor A Phase X Current

What it means

The hybrid control module detects a generic fault on phase X current measurement of drive motor A. The drive motor's position, current and temperature are watched continuously; a fault here downgrades the inverter to a safe operating point or triggers torque reduction.

At a glance

  • Usually lights the check-engine light
  • The engine or gearbox may go into limp mode

How it works

Drive Motor A is an electric traction motor, and the hybrid control module monitors its phase currents to control torque and protect the inverter. This code identifies a fault in the Phase X current measurement, so the module may limit torque or place the inverter in a safe operating state.

Common causes

Most likely first.

  1. Phase current sensor failed
  2. Wiring or connector fault

Symptoms

  • EV/hybrid system warning light on
  • Reduced motor power or torque
  • Possible limp mode or vehicle shutdown

How to diagnose it

  1. Read freeze-frame data and all hybrid-system codes, then review Drive Motor A Phase X current data alongside the other phases.
  2. Inspect the accessible Drive Motor A and inverter connectors and harness for damage, corrosion, or loose connections without disturbing high-voltage components.
  3. Check the low-voltage wiring and connector terminals for the Phase X current sensor using the manufacturer's wiring information.
  4. Have the Phase X current-sensor signal and supply checked using the manufacturer's diagnostic procedure.
  5. If wiring and sensor checks pass, follow the manufacturer's procedure to assess the inverter and Drive Motor A current measurement.

Common fixes

  • Repair a loose or damaged low-voltage connector or harness serving the Phase X current measurement.
  • Repair an identified wiring fault in the current-sensor circuit.
  • Replace the Phase X current sensor if testing confirms it has failed.
  • Repair or replace the inverter only if manufacturer-guided testing identifies it as the source.

Can I keep driving?

Reduced torque, limp mode, or shutdown can occur, so avoid high-speed or high-load driving and stop if the vehicle warns of a hybrid fault or loses power. High-voltage diagnosis should be handled by someone qualified to work on the vehicle's system.

A code shows where the control module detected a fault, not always which part failed. Check the causes in order and confirm with a test before replacing parts. Have several codes? Check them together

This is a generic code: it means the same on every make. The car’s maker may add more detail in its own service information.
