OBD-II fault code

P2C22: Exhaust Heat Exchanger Exhaust Bypass Valve A Position Sensor Circuit

What it means

The position sensor for exhaust heat exchanger bypass valve A reports a circuit condition. Heat recovery routing cannot be verified reliably.

At a glance

  • Usually lights the check-engine light

How it works

The exhaust heat exchanger bypass valve A routes exhaust through or around the heat exchanger, and its position sensor lets the control module verify that routing. This circuit code sets when the module detects an electrical fault in the position-sensor circuit, so it cannot reliably verify valve A's position.

Common causes

Most likely first.

  1. Position sensor failed
  2. Wiring or connector fault

Symptoms

  • Check-engine light
  • Reduced engine power
  • Lower fuel economy

How to diagnose it

  1. Save freeze-frame data and check scan-tool data for exhaust bypass valve A's commanded and reported positions, if available.
  2. With the exhaust cool, inspect valve A's position sensor connector and wiring for heat damage, corrosion, loose pins, or chafing.
  3. Check whether the sensor signal changes as valve A is commanded to move, using scan-tool data or the manufacturer's test procedure.
  4. Test the sensor's supply, ground, and signal wiring against the wiring diagram and manufacturer's specification.
  5. If the circuit is intact, test the position sensor and valve actuator separately to determine which fails to report or achieve position.

Common fixes

  • Repair heat-damaged, chafed, or poorly connected position-sensor wiring at bypass valve A.
  • Clean and secure corroded connector pins.
  • Replace the position sensor if it fails the manufacturer's circuit test.
  • Repair the valve actuator if the sensor circuit works but valve A does not move as commanded.

Can I keep driving?

You may notice reduced power or fuel economy, so avoid heavy loads if acceleration is limited. Stop if exhaust fumes enter the cabin or the area around the exhaust system appears damaged.

A code shows where the control module detected a fault, not always which part failed. Check the causes in order and confirm with a test before replacing parts. Have several codes? Check them together

This is a generic code: it means the same on every make. The car’s maker may add more detail in its own service information.
