OBD-II fault code

P2C20: Cold Start Fuel Pressure Regulator A Exceeded Control Limits - Pressure Too High

What it means

During cold start, fuel pressure regulator A overshoots target pressure - actual rail pressure rises above the calibrated upper limit.

At a glance

  • Usually lights the check-engine light
  • Affects emissions; the car can fail an emissions test

How it works

Fuel pressure regulator A controls rail pressure during cold start, and the control module compares actual pressure with its commanded target. This code sets when pressure rises above the allowed upper limit, indicating the system cannot reduce pressure as expected in that operating condition.

Common causes

Most likely first.

  1. Fuel pressure regulator stuck closed or unable to control pressure
  2. Restricted fuel return or pressure relief path
  3. Wiring or connector fault affecting regulator control

Symptoms

  • Check engine light on
  • Hard start, no start, or stalling under load
  • Power loss especially at high load or rpm
  • Possible long cranking time

How to diagnose it

  1. Save freeze-frame data and compare commanded with actual rail pressure during the cold-start event to confirm the overpressure condition.
  2. On a cold engine, observe pressure during cranking and start-up with a scan tool, checking it against the manufacturer's specification.
  3. Inspect regulator A's wiring and connector for damage or poor connections that could interfere with its control.
  4. Check for a restricted fuel return or pressure relief path using the manufacturer's diagnostic procedure.
  5. If the circuit and pressure path are clear, test whether regulator A is stuck closed or otherwise unable to reduce pressure.

Common fixes

  • Repair a damaged or poorly connected regulator A wire or connector.
  • Clear a confirmed restriction in the fuel return or pressure relief path.
  • Replace regulator A if it cannot reduce pressure and the control circuit is sound.
  • Replace the pressure sensor only if its reading fails the manufacturer's accuracy test.

Can I keep driving?

Avoid hard acceleration and stop driving if the engine stalls, runs very poorly, or fuel leaks are present. Incorrectly high pressure can disrupt starting and running, and a leak creates an immediate fire risk.

A code shows where the control module detected a fault, not always which part failed. Check the causes in order and confirm with a test before replacing parts. Have several codes? Check them together

This is a generic code: it means the same on every make. The car’s maker may add more detail in its own service information.
