OBD-II fault code

P2BBB: Turbocharger/Supercharger Bypass Valve A Position Sensor Circuit

What it means

The turbocharger/supercharger bypass valve A reports a position sensor circuit condition. Boost recirculation cannot be commanded reliably.

At a glance

  • Usually lights the check-engine light
  • Affects emissions; the car can fail an emissions test
  • The engine or gearbox may go into limp mode

How it works

Turbocharger or supercharger bypass valve A controls the path that recirculates boost air, and its position sensor reports the valve's position to the control module. This code indicates a fault in the valve A position-sensor circuit, so the module cannot reliably verify or command boost recirculation.

Common causes

Most likely first.

  1. Position sensor failed
  2. Wiring or connector fault

Symptoms

  • Check engine light on
  • Significant power loss / limp mode
  • Possible blue or black smoke from exhaust
  • Whistling or hissing sound from intake

How to diagnose it

  1. Record freeze-frame data and check live bypass valve A position and commanded position, if available, to see whether the feedback is missing or implausible.
  2. Inspect valve A, its connector, and wiring near the intake and boost plumbing for loose plugs, corrosion, heat damage, or chafing.
  3. Check the intake pipes and bypass valve area for a loose connection, air leak, or obstruction that could accompany the reported hissing or whistling.
  4. Use the wiring diagram to test the valve A position-sensor supply, ground, and signal circuits for opens, shorts, or poor connections.
  5. If the circuit checks pass, test the valve A position sensor and valve movement using the manufacturer's procedure.

Common fixes

  • Reconnect or repair the valve A sensor connector.
  • Repair damaged wiring in the bypass valve A position-sensor circuit.
  • Repair a loose intake or boost hose found during inspection.
  • Replace the bypass valve A position sensor or valve assembly if testing identifies it as faulty.

Can I keep driving?

With significant power loss or limp mode, avoid hard acceleration, towing, and high-speed driving; have the fault diagnosed promptly. Unreliable boost recirculation can worsen drivability and may be accompanied by smoke or an intake leak.

A code shows where the control module detected a fault, not always which part failed. Check the causes in order and confirm with a test before replacing parts. Have several codes? Check them together

This is a generic code: it means the same on every make. The car’s maker may add more detail in its own service information.
