OBD-II fault code

P2BAC: NOx Exceedence - Insufficient Reagent Quality

What it means

The diesel exhaust aftertreatment system detects elevated NOx levels combined with abnormal reagent (AdBlue/DEF) consumption, indicating that the reagent quality is insufficient or contaminated. Many regions trigger driver inducement (limited restarts).

At a glance

  • Usually lights the check-engine light
  • Affects emissions; the car can fail an emissions test
  • The engine or gearbox may go into limp mode

How it works

The SCR system uses correctly formulated DEF/AdBlue to convert NOx in diesel exhaust. P2BAC sets when NOx remains high and the system identifies insufficient reductant quality, which can result from diluted, aged, or incorrect liquid in the tank.

Common causes

Most likely first.

  1. Non-DEF liquid in tank (water, diesel)
  2. Aged or diluted DEF/AdBlue

Symptoms

  • Check engine light or NOx warning on
  • AdBlue/DEF level or quality warning
  • Possible no-start countdown after ignore period
  • Failed emissions inspection (NOx)

How to diagnose it

  1. Read freeze-frame data and related SCR, fluid-quality, and NOx codes to confirm the conditions when quality was judged insufficient.
  2. Check the DEF tank history and warning display, and verify that the tank contains the correct DEF rather than water, diesel, or another liquid.
  3. Inspect the tank and filling area for signs of contamination and check the fluid condition using the manufacturer's specified method.
  4. If the fluid is correct, inspect quality-sensor wiring and connectors and compare sensor data with the manufacturer's specification.
  5. After correcting fluid or sensor issues, follow the manufacturer's procedure to clear inducement and verify SCR operation.

Common fixes

  • Drain contaminated or incorrect liquid and refill with correct DEF/AdBlue as directed by the manufacturer.
  • Replace aged or diluted DEF with fresh, correct fluid.
  • Clean the fill area and repair any contamination source before refilling.
  • Repair faulty fluid-quality sensor wiring or replace a sensor confirmed out of specification.

Can I keep driving?

Correct the fluid warning promptly and follow any restart countdown; some vehicles restrict power or eventually prevent restarting. Do not continue driving with suspected diesel or other contamination in the DEF tank, as it can damage SCR components.

A code shows where the control module detected a fault, not always which part failed. Check the causes in order and confirm with a test before replacing parts. Have several codes? Check them together
