What it means
During cold start, the ECM detects that the injection pulse on cylinder 4 does not produce the expected combustion result. Cold-start specific pulse calibration deviates from learned values.
At a glance
- Usually lights the check-engine light
- Affects emissions; the car can fail an emissions test
How it works
The ECM monitors cylinder 4's combustion response to its injector pulse specifically during cold-start operation, comparing it with cold calibration and learned values. P2B0B sets when cylinder 4's response falls outside the expected pattern, potentially because of temperature-dependent injector behavior or poor atomization.
Common causes
Most likely first.
- Injector behaviour drifts at low temperature
- Poor fuel atomization at cold start
Symptoms
- Rough idle just after a cold start
- Engine stumble or vibration when cold
- Check-engine light
How to diagnose it
- Read freeze-frame and cylinder-specific misfire or contribution data from a cold start to check whether cylinder 4 is the outlier.
- Determine whether the rough idle is confined to cold starts and improves as the engine warms.
- Inspect the cylinder 4 injector connector and wiring for a loose fit, corrosion, chafing, or damage.
- Compare cylinder 4 injector command and contribution with other cylinders in live data while the engine is cold.
- If cylinder 4 remains abnormal, have its injector flow and spray checked against the manufacturer's specification.
Common fixes
- Use fuel meeting the vehicle's specification if fuel quality is in doubt and reassess cold starts.
- Repair the cylinder 4 injector wiring or connector if inspection finds a fault.
- Clean or service the cylinder 4 injector if deposits are affecting spray and the injector is serviceable.
- Replace the cylinder 4 injector if cold-condition testing confirms out-of-specification performance.
Can I keep driving?
If the light is steady and the cold roughness is mild and brief, drive gently until diagnosis, especially before the engine warms; recurring poor combustion can increase emissions. Stop if the light flashes, the engine shakes badly, or it stalls or loses power unsafely.
A code shows where the control module detected a fault, not always which part failed. Check the causes in order and confirm with a test before replacing parts. Have several codes? Check them together
This is a generic code: it means the same on every make. The car’s maker may add more detail in its own service information.
