What it means
During cold start, the ECM detects that the injection pulse on cylinder 2 does not produce the expected combustion result. Cold-start specific pulse calibration deviates from learned values.
At a glance
- Usually lights the check-engine light
- Affects emissions; the car can fail an emissions test
How it works
The ECM checks cylinder 2's combustion response to its injector command during cold-start operation, using cold-specific calibration and learned values. P2B09 is set when cylinder 2's cold injection performance differs from the expected response, often due to injector behavior or fuel atomization at low temperature.
Common causes
Most likely first.
- Injector behaviour drifts at low temperature
- Poor fuel atomization at cold start
Symptoms
- Rough idle just after a cold start
- Engine stumble or vibration when cold
- Check-engine light
How to diagnose it
- Capture startup freeze-frame data after a cold soak and check whether cylinder 2 has higher misfire or lower contribution than the other cylinders.
- Observe whether the stumble is limited to cold operation and improves as the engine reaches operating temperature.
- Inspect the cylinder 2 injector connector and harness for corrosion, loose fit, rubbing, or heat damage.
- Compare cylinder 2 injector command and contribution against the other cylinders in live data during a cold start.
- If cylinder 2 remains the outlier, test its injector's cold-operation flow and spray against the manufacturer's specification.
Common fixes
- Use the vehicle's specified fuel and see whether the cold-start issue continues after suspect fuel is consumed.
- Repair the cylinder 2 injector connector or wiring if it is damaged or poorly connected.
- Clean or service the cylinder 2 injector if deposits affecting atomization are confirmed and service is supported.
- Replace the cylinder 2 injector if testing confirms cold-condition performance outside specification.
Can I keep driving?
For mild roughness that clears as the engine warms, keep driving gentle while cold and get the fault checked; repeated poor combustion can increase emissions. Stop if the light flashes, vibration is severe, or the engine stalls or loses power in a way that makes driving unsafe.
A code shows where the control module detected a fault, not always which part failed. Check the causes in order and confirm with a test before replacing parts. Have several codes? Check them together
This is a generic code: it means the same on every make. The car’s maker may add more detail in its own service information.
