What it means
Voltage on the wastegate position sensor A signal line is above the expected window. Wire shorted to B+ or sensor open.
At a glance
- Usually lights the check-engine light
- Affects emissions; the car can fail an emissions test
- The engine or gearbox may go into limp mode
How it works
Wastegate position sensor A reports turbocharger wastegate actuator position to the engine control module. P2AB9 is set when sensor A's signal is higher than the expected range, which can result from a signal short to battery voltage, an open or high-resistance signal or ground path, or a sensor fault.
Common causes
Most likely first.
- Signal wire shorted to B+
- Open or high-resistance signal/ground circuit
- Sensor fault
Symptoms
- Check-engine light may be on
- Reduced engine power
- Poor acceleration or turbo response
How to diagnose it
- Use freeze-frame and live data to confirm that wastegate sensor A reads high and compare it with the commanded actuator position.
- Inspect sensor A's connector and harness for loose pins, damaged insulation, corrosion, or wiring contacting a power source.
- Check sensor A's signal wire for a short to battery voltage and inspect its ground and reference connections using the wiring diagram.
- Measure the signal and test circuit continuity and resistance against the manufacturer's specification, paying attention to open or high-resistance connections.
- If the wiring and connections pass, test wastegate sensor A and its actuator feedback before replacing the sensor.
Common fixes
- Reconnect or repair a loose or corroded sensor A connector.
- Repair a signal wire shorted to battery voltage.
- Repair an open or high-resistance section of the sensor A signal or ground circuit.
- Replace wastegate position sensor A if it produces a high signal despite a sound circuit.
Can I keep driving?
The module may limit boost or put the engine into limp mode, so avoid hard acceleration, towing, and high-speed driving. Stop somewhere safe if the power loss makes it difficult to keep up with traffic.
A code shows where the control module detected a fault, not always which part failed. Check the causes in order and confirm with a test before replacing parts. Have several codes? Check them together
This is a generic code: it means the same on every make. The car’s maker may add more detail in its own service information.
