OBD-II fault code

P2AAD: Diesel Fuel Presence Sensor Range/Performance

What it means

The diesel fuel presence signal does not match plausibility checks against related signals. Sensor drift.

At a glance

  • Usually lights the check-engine light
  • Affects emissions; the car can fail an emissions test

How it works

The diesel fuel presence sensor supplies a reading that the engine control module checks against related fuel-system information. This range/performance code sets when the reading is present but does not behave plausibly, which can result from sensor drift or a wiring or connector problem.

Common causes

Most likely first.

  1. Sensor fault
  2. Wiring or connector fault

Symptoms

  • Check-engine light on
  • Fuel-system warning light, if equipped
  • Reduced power or rough running

How to diagnose it

  1. Record freeze-frame data and compare the sensor reading with related fuel-system data to identify the conditions under which the plausibility check fails.
  2. Inspect the sensor connector and harness for corrosion, loose terminals, moisture, or damage that could distort an otherwise present signal.
  3. Review live data through operating conditions that reproduce the fault and check whether the sensor reading changes smoothly and agrees with related signals.
  4. Test sensor power, ground, and signal wiring for excessive resistance, shorts, or intermittent connections using the wiring diagram.
  5. If circuit checks pass, test the sensor using the manufacturer's procedure and replace it if its output remains outside the expected range.

Common fixes

  • Repair a loose, corroded, or damaged sensor connector.
  • Repair wiring or ground faults affecting the sensor signal.
  • Replace the diesel fuel presence sensor if its reading drifts or fails the specified plausibility test.
  • Clear the code and verify that the sensor reading agrees with related fuel-system data.

Can I keep driving?

If the vehicle runs normally, limit driving and have the fault checked soon because an implausible fuel reading may affect engine control and emissions. Avoid heavy loads and stop if rough running or power loss develops.

A code shows where the control module detected a fault, not always which part failed. Check the causes in order and confirm with a test before replacing parts. Have several codes? Check them together

This is a generic code: it means the same on every make. The car’s maker may add more detail in its own service information.
