OBD-II fault code

P2A92: Alternative Fuel Tank Select Valve A Control Performance

What it means

The control module monitors whether tank select valve A responds as commanded to select the alternative fuel tank. It sets this code when the valve’s operation does not match the expected response.

At a glance

  • Usually lights the check-engine light
  • Affects emissions; the car can fail an emissions test
  • The engine or gearbox may go into limp mode

How it works

Alternative fuel tank select valve A moves fuel routing to the commanded tank. The control module checks whether valve A responds as expected and sets P2A92 when its operation does not match the command, such as when it sticks or cannot move with adequate force.

Common causes

Most likely first.

  1. Valve stuck in last commanded position
  2. Coil force degraded

Symptoms

  • Check-engine or alternative-fuel system warning light, if equipped
  • Difficulty switching fuel tanks
  • Loss of power or stalling

How to diagnose it

  1. Record freeze-frame data and review tank-selection commands and status data to confirm the fault involves valve A's response.
  2. Inspect valve A and its linkage or mounting for damage, contamination, or anything that could prevent movement.
  3. Check the valve A connector and wiring for poor connections that could weaken its actuation.
  4. Command valve A with a scan tool, if supported, and observe whether its position or fuel-routing status changes.
  5. If it fails to respond, test valve A's coil and actuation against the manufacturer's specification before replacing it.

Common fixes

  • Remove an obstruction or correct a binding linkage that prevents valve A from moving.
  • Repair a loose, corroded, or damaged electrical connection at valve A.
  • Replace valve A if it sticks or cannot develop adequate actuation force despite a sound circuit.
  • Clear the code and confirm valve A completes a tank-selection command.

Can I keep driving?

Limit driving if tank selection is unreliable, and avoid routes where stalling would create a hazard. A valve that fails to change position can cause loss of power or leave the engine without the selected fuel supply.

A code shows where the control module detected a fault, not always which part failed. Check the causes in order and confirm with a test before replacing parts. Have several codes? Check them together

This is a generic code: it means the same on every make. The car’s maker may add more detail in its own service information.
