OBD-II fault code

P2A18: Injection Pump Fuel Metering Control D Low (Cam/Rotor/Injector)

What it means

The control signal for injection pump metering channel D is below the expected window. Wire shorted to ground or actuator short.

At a glance

  • Usually lights the check-engine light
  • Affects emissions; the car can fail an emissions test
  • The engine or gearbox may go into limp mode

How it works

Channel D is a fuel-metering control path in the injection pump, identified by the vehicle maker as a cam, rotor, or injector path. The control module monitors its electrical signal; a signal below the expected window sets P2A18 and can interrupt fuel metering enough to cause hard starting or stalling.

Common causes

Most likely first.

  1. Control wire shorted to ground
  2. Internal short in metering actuator

Symptoms

  • Check-engine light
  • Hard starting or stalling
  • Reduced power

How to diagnose it

  1. Record freeze-frame data and check live data for channel D to see when its control signal falls below the expected window.
  2. Inspect channel D's pump connector and wiring for chafing, pin damage, corrosion, or contact with ground.
  3. Check the channel D signal wire for a short to ground using the manufacturer's circuit information and procedure.
  4. Test the channel D metering actuator for an internal short according to the manufacturer's procedure.
  5. After repair, clear the code and confirm the channel D signal stays in range during starting and operation.

Common fixes

  • Repair chafed or grounded wiring in the channel D control circuit.
  • Clean or repair damaged terminals at the channel D pump connector.
  • Replace the channel D metering actuator if testing confirms an internal short.

Can I keep driving?

Because P2A18 can cause hard starting, stalling, or reduced power, avoid unnecessary trips and do not drive if the engine stalls or cannot maintain power safely. Continued operation may leave you stranded and can increase emissions.

A code shows where the control module detected a fault, not always which part failed. Check the causes in order and confirm with a test before replacing parts. Have several codes? Check them together

This is a generic code: it means the same on every make. The car’s maker may add more detail in its own service information.
