What it means
The ion current signal from cylinder 12 is outside the expected range for combustion conditions. Combustion quality cannot be assessed reliably.
At a glance
- Usually lights the check-engine light
- Affects emissions; the car can fail an emissions test
How it works
An ion-sensing ignition system uses the spark plug in cylinder 12 to detect electrical activity in the gases after the spark. The engine control module compares that signal with the expected pattern for combustion; P28BD sets when the signal is present but its range or response does not match the expected combustion conditions.
Common causes
Most likely first.
- Spark plug aged - electrode shape changed
- Ion sense circuit gain drift
- Sensor element aged beyond calibration window
Symptoms
- Check-engine light
- Engine misfire or rough running
- Reduced power
How to diagnose it
- Record freeze-frame data and check cylinder-specific misfire and ion-sense live data to see when cylinder 12's signal goes out of range.
- Inspect cylinder 12's spark plug for a worn or changed electrode shape, deposits, or damage that could alter the ion signal.
- Check the cylinder 12 plug connection, ion-sense wiring, and connectors for loose fit, corrosion, chafing, or heat damage.
- Compare cylinder 12's ion-sense response with other cylinders under similar operating conditions, if the scan tool supports it.
- Test the cylinder 12 ion-sense circuit and module response using the vehicle's service information and manufacturer's specification.
Common fixes
- Replace a worn or damaged cylinder 12 spark plug with the specified type.
- Clean or repair a loose, corroded, or damaged cylinder 12 connector or wiring.
- Repair or replace the cylinder 12 ion-sense wiring if circuit tests show a fault.
- Replace or recalibrate the ion-sense module or sensor element if testing confirms gain drift or aging.
Can I keep driving?
If the engine runs smoothly and the warning light is steady, limit driving and arrange diagnosis soon; the module may not reliably assess cylinder 12 combustion, which can increase emissions or allow a misfire to worsen. Stop driving if it runs very rough, loses substantial power, or the check-engine light flashes.
A code shows where the control module detected a fault, not always which part failed. Check the causes in order and confirm with a test before replacing parts. Have several codes? Check them together
This is a generic code: it means the same on every make. The car’s maker may add more detail in its own service information.
