OBD-II fault code

P2862: Shift Fork B Actuator Circuit High

What it means

The transmission control module monitors the electrical signal in the shift fork B actuator circuit. It sets this code when the circuit voltage rises above the expected range.

At a glance

  • Usually lights the check-engine light
  • The engine or gearbox may go into limp mode

How it works

The TCM monitors the electrical signal in the shift fork B actuator circuit as it commands the actuator. P2862 sets when the signal is above the expected range, which may be caused by a control wire shorted to battery power, an open actuator coil, or a poor connector contact.

Common causes

Most likely first.

  1. Control wire shorted to B+
  2. Open actuator coil
  3. Connector pins corroded - high contact resistance

Symptoms

  • Check engine or transmission warning light on
  • Harsh, delayed, or missing shifts
  • Possible limp mode (locked in one gear)
  • Slipping or shuddering during gear changes

How to diagnose it

  1. Save transmission codes, freeze-frame data, and available fork B circuit readings before clearing them; check what the TCM was commanding when the high signal occurred.
  2. Inspect the shift fork B actuator connector and harness for corrosion, loose terminals, or insulation damage that could expose the control wire to battery power.
  3. Check the control wire for a short to B+ using the vehicle wiring diagram and the manufacturer's procedure.
  4. With the circuit isolated as specified, test the shift fork B actuator coil for an open circuit and compare the result with the manufacturer's specification.
  5. If the wire and actuator pass, check connector contact and continuity through the circuit to the TCM before considering a module fault.

Common fixes

  • Repair a control wire that is shorted to battery power.
  • Correct loose, corroded, or damaged shift fork B actuator connector terminals.
  • Replace the shift fork B actuator if its coil is open.
  • Repair an open or poor circuit connection between the actuator and TCM if testing identifies one.

Can I keep driving?

Keep driving only as far as needed to reach a safe place if shifts are harsh, delayed, or missing; avoid high speeds and heavy loads. If the transmission enters limp mode or slips, stop and arrange repair because further driving can worsen gear or clutch damage.

A code shows where the control module detected a fault, not always which part failed. Check the causes in order and confirm with a test before replacing parts. Have several codes? Check them together

This is a generic code: it means the same on every make. The car’s maker may add more detail in its own service information.
