P2851: Shift Fork Position Sensor A/B Correlation

What it means

The position signals of shift fork sensors A and B do not correlate as expected for the active gear pre-selection. Plausibility check fails.

At a glance

  • Usually lights the check-engine light
  • The engine or gearbox may go into limp mode

How it works

Shift fork sensors A and B report the positions of two transmission selector forks, allowing the transmission control module to check that the forks agree with the requested pre-selected gear. P2851 sets when their signals fail that correlation check, which can happen if the sensors are offset or their harness connections are swapped.

Common causes

Most likely first.

  1. Offset between the two sensors after replacement
  2. Sensor harness incorrectly swapped

Symptoms

  • Check engine or transmission warning light on
  • Harsh, delayed, or missing shifts
  • Possible limp mode (locked in one gear)
  • Slipping or shuddering during gear changes

How to diagnose it

  1. Save the transmission freeze-frame and read live fork-position data to see which A/B readings disagree with the commanded gear.
  2. Check service history for recent work on either fork sensor, then confirm sensors A and B and their connectors are identified and routed correctly.
  3. Inspect the A/B sensor connectors and harness for swapped plugs, loose terminals, corrosion, pin damage, or chafing.
  4. With the transmission safely supported and using the manufacturer's procedure, compare each sensor's reported position as the selector moves through commanded pre-selection states.
  5. If wiring and connector routing are correct, verify sensor alignment or offset using the manufacturer's calibration procedure and inspect the fork mechanism if readings remain implausible.

Common fixes

  • Reconnect the A and B sensor harnesses to their correct sensors.
  • Repair damaged wiring or connector terminals in the A/B sensor circuits.
  • Correct the A/B sensor offset and perform the specified calibration.
  • Replace a confirmed faulty shift fork position sensor.

Can I keep driving?

Avoid driving if shifts are missing, harsh, or the transmission is locked in one gear; continued operation can worsen slipping or damage transmission components. If shifts remain predictable and the vehicle responds normally, limit driving to a short trip for diagnosis.

A code shows where the control module detected a fault, not always which part failed. Check the causes in order and confirm with a test before replacing parts. Have several codes? Check them together
