What it means
The transmission control unit measures clutch B temperature above the safe operating threshold. Repeated slip events or excessive load have heated the clutch pack.
At a glance
- Usually lights the check-engine light
- The engine or gearbox may go into limp mode
How it works
Clutch B is one of the transmission’s friction packs, which engages to carry torque in certain gears. The transmission control unit estimates or monitors its temperature and sets P27F3 when it exceeds the safe threshold, often after repeated slip or heavy load.
Common causes
Most likely first.
- Excessive clutch slip during launches
- Degraded transmission fluid lowers heat capacity
Symptoms
- Check engine or transmission warning light on
- Harsh, delayed, or missing shifts
- Possible limp mode (locked in one gear)
- Slipping or shuddering during gear changes
How to diagnose it
- Read freeze-frame data and transmission temperature and slip data, if available, to see whether the fault followed a hot start, repeated launches, or sustained load.
- Check the transmission fluid level and condition using the vehicle’s specified checking procedure, since degraded or incorrect fluid can reduce heat control.
- Inspect for transmission fluid leaks and verify that the fluid type matches the manufacturer’s specification.
- Use a scan tool to compare commanded and actual gear or clutch slip during a controlled drive, stopping if slipping or overheating worsens.
- If fluid and operating conditions do not explain the code, have the clutch B control and temperature data assessed against the manufacturer’s diagnostic procedure.
Common fixes
- Correct the fluid level and repair any leak.
- Replace degraded or incorrect transmission fluid with the specified fluid.
- Repair a fault causing repeated clutch B slip, such as a control or hydraulic problem confirmed by testing.
- Repair or replace the clutch B pack if testing confirms it is worn or damaged.
Can I keep driving?
Avoid hard launches, towing, and continued driving if shifts slip, shudder, or the transmission enters limp mode; overheating can further damage clutch B. If the vehicle cannot shift predictably or loses drive, stop somewhere safe and arrange recovery.
A code shows where the control module detected a fault, not always which part failed. Check the causes in order and confirm with a test before replacing parts. Have several codes? Check them together
This is a generic code: it means the same on every make. The car’s maker may add more detail in its own service information.
