OBD-II fault code

P2787: Clutch Temperature Too High

What it means

The controller detects that the transmission clutch temperature is above its calibrated limit.

At a glance

  • Usually lights the check-engine light

How it works

The transmission clutch transfers power by pressing friction surfaces together, and the control module monitors clutch temperature or a related temperature estimate. P2787 sets when that temperature exceeds its calibrated limit, which can result from excessive slip during launch or insufficient cooling oil flow.

Common causes

Most likely first.

  1. Excessive slip during launch
  2. Cooling oil flow restricted or low level

Symptoms

  • Check engine or transmission warning light on
  • Harsh, delayed, or missing shifts
  • Possible limp mode (locked in one gear)
  • Slipping or shuddering during gear changes

How to diagnose it

  1. Save freeze-frame data and review clutch temperature, slip, and vehicle speed to see whether the code followed repeated launches or sustained slipping.
  2. Check transmission fluid level and condition using the manufacturer's specified procedure, since low or degraded fluid can reduce cooling.
  3. Inspect for fluid leaks and check any accessible cooling oil passages or lines for damage or restriction.
  4. Use a scan tool to compare commanded clutch engagement with measured slip during a controlled drive, stopping if temperature rises rapidly.
  5. If slip or overheating persists with correct fluid level and no visible restriction, have the clutch and oil circulation system tested to the manufacturer's procedure.

Common fixes

  • Correct the transmission fluid level with the specified fluid.
  • Repair fluid leaks or damaged cooling lines.
  • Clear a confirmed restriction in the clutch cooling oil circuit.
  • Repair or replace a worn or slipping clutch after confirming the cause.

Can I keep driving?

Avoid hard launches, towing, and repeated stop-start driving until the cause is found. Stop safely if the transmission slips badly, loses gears, or displays an overheat warning; continued clutch overheating can damage the friction surfaces and fluid.

A code shows where the control module detected a fault, not always which part failed. Check the causes in order and confirm with a test before replacing parts. Have several codes? Check them together

This is a generic code: it means the same on every make. The car’s maker may add more detail in its own service information.
