What it means
The transmission control module detects that transmission range control is not performing as expected.
At a glance
- Usually lights the check-engine light
How it works
The transmission control module commands range control and monitors whether the transmission's solenoids and pressure switches respond as expected. Range control coordinates the transmission's operating range, so a mismatch can cause delayed or harsh shifts or limit available gears. This code sets when the module detects that range-control performance is outside its expected behavior.
Common causes
Most likely first.
- Fault in transmission solenoid or pressure-switch operation
- Wiring or connector fault
- TCM fault
Symptoms
- Transmission warning light
- Unexpected, delayed, or harsh shifts
- Limited shifting or limp mode
How to diagnose it
- Read transmission codes and freeze-frame data, then note which range or shift event was occurring when the fault set.
- Check live transmission data for commanded range, actual range, solenoid commands, and pressure-switch status to identify which response differs.
- Inspect the transmission harness and connectors, especially connections to range-control solenoids and pressure switches, for damage, corrosion, or fluid intrusion.
- Test the relevant solenoid and pressure-switch circuits and components against the manufacturer's specifications.
- If the wiring and components pass, check module power and grounds, applicable software updates, and transmission-controller faults using manufacturer diagnostic information.
Common fixes
- Repair a loose, corroded, or damaged transmission connector or wiring fault.
- Replace a failed range-control solenoid or pressure switch after circuit testing identifies it.
- Correct a fluid or hydraulic issue if scan data and manufacturer procedures point to pressure-control performance.
- Reprogram or replace the transmission control module only after its inputs, circuits, and controlled components are verified.
Can I keep driving?
Avoid towing or heavy acceleration if the transmission shifts unexpectedly or harshly. If available gears become limited, the vehicle slips, or it enters limp mode, stop when safe and arrange recovery to prevent further damage.
A code shows where the control module detected a fault, not always which part failed. Check the causes in order and confirm with a test before replacing parts. Have several codes? Check them together
This is a generic code: it means the same on every make. The car’s maker may add more detail in its own service information.
