OBD-II fault code

P27B1: Internal Control Module Transmission Range Select Performance

What it means

The internal range-select interpretation logic in the transmission control module does not match external sensor inputs.

At a glance

  • Usually lights the check-engine light

How it works

The transmission control module interprets the selected range, such as Park, Reverse, Neutral, or Drive, using its internal logic and inputs from the range sensor or selector circuit. It compares those inputs with the range it believes is selected and monitors whether range selection behaves consistently. This code sets when the module's range-select performance does not agree with external range information.

Common causes

Most likely first.

  1. Internal logic drift after firmware update
  2. External range sensor drift

Symptoms

  • Check engine or transmission warning light on
  • Harsh, delayed, or missing shifts
  • Possible limp mode (locked in one gear)
  • Slipping or shuddering during gear changes

How to diagnose it

  1. Scan the transmission module for codes and freeze-frame data, and compare the reported selected range with the driver's selector position.
  2. With the vehicle secured, check live range-sensor and selector data while moving the selector through its positions to see whether readings are stable and agree.
  3. Inspect the external range sensor, selector linkage, connectors, and wiring for misalignment, looseness, corrosion, or damage.
  4. Check the range-sensor circuit and module power and grounds against the manufacturer's specifications, looking for intermittent faults or poor connections.
  5. If external inputs are correct but the module still interprets range incorrectly, check for applicable software updates and module faults using manufacturer diagnostic information.

Common fixes

  • Adjust or repair the selector linkage or external range sensor if its position does not match the selected range.
  • Repair corroded, loose, or damaged range-sensor wiring and connectors.
  • Update or reprogram the transmission module if a manufacturer-approved calibration addresses the range interpretation fault.
  • Repair or replace the transmission control module only after external inputs, wiring, and software have been verified.

Can I keep driving?

Do not drive if the indicated range disagrees with the selector, the vehicle may start in gear, or it cannot reliably select Park or Neutral. If shifts are erratic or the transmission locks into one gear, stop in a safe place and arrange recovery.

A code shows where the control module detected a fault, not always which part failed. Check the causes in order and confirm with a test before replacing parts. Have several codes? Check them together

This is a generic code: it means the same on every make. The car’s maker may add more detail in its own service information.
