OBD-II fault code

P279C: Transfer Case Gear Neutral Incorrect Ratio

What it means

When the transfer case is in Neutral the measured output speed is not zero or shows unexpected drag.

At a glance

  • Usually lights the check-engine light

How it works

In transfer-case Neutral, the case should disconnect drive so its output does not transmit torque. The control module monitors output speed and range status; this code sets when output speed or apparent drag is inconsistent with Neutral, which can occur if the shift fork has not fully engaged Neutral or contaminated oil creates drag.

Common causes

Most likely first.

  1. Shift fork not fully in neutral position
  2. Drag torque from contaminated oil

Symptoms

  • Check engine or 4WD warning light may be on
  • Vehicle may creep or resist rolling in transfer case Neutral
  • Unusual drivetrain drag or noise

How to diagnose it

  1. Record freeze-frame data and review transfer-case range status, output speed, and related 4WD codes to determine whether Neutral was commanded and reported.
  2. On level ground, secure the vehicle and verify the transfer case's displayed or scan-tool range status without relying on an unsafe vehicle movement test.
  3. Inspect the transfer-case shift linkage, actuator connections, and wiring for damage or incomplete movement.
  4. Check transfer-case fluid level and condition using the manufacturer's procedure, looking for contamination that could contribute to drag.
  5. If the range command and speed signals are valid, have the shift mechanism and internal fork inspected for incomplete Neutral engagement.

Common fixes

  • Correct the transfer-case fluid condition or level according to the manufacturer's procedure.
  • Repair damaged shift linkage or actuator wiring that prevents full Neutral selection.
  • Adjust or repair the range actuator or linkage if it is not completing its movement.
  • Repair or replace an internally worn shift fork or transfer-case components as needed.

Can I keep driving?

Do not assume the vehicle is safe to roll or tow with the transfer case in Neutral if it creeps or resists movement; secure it and follow the vehicle's towing instructions. Unexpected torque transfer or drivetrain drag can cause vehicle movement or damage.

A code shows where the control module detected a fault, not always which part failed. Check the causes in order and confirm with a test before replacing parts. Have several codes? Check them together

This is a generic code: it means the same on every make. The car’s maker may add more detail in its own service information.
