What it means
When the transfer case is in Low range the measured input/output speed ratio does not match the expected value.
At a glance
- Usually lights the check-engine light
How it works
Low range engages the transfer case's reduction gearing to provide extra torque at low vehicle speeds. The control module checks the input-to-output speed ratio while low range is selected; this code sets when that ratio does not match the expected low-range ratio, which may indicate a stretched chain or worn planetary gears.
Common causes
Most likely first.
- Stretched transfer case chain
- Worn planetary gear set
Symptoms
- Check engine or 4WD warning light may be on
- Low-range operation may feel abnormal or produce unusual noise
- 4WD system may limit operation
How to diagnose it
- Record freeze-frame data and review the commanded range, transfer-case input and output speeds, and related 4WD codes to establish that the fault occurred in low range.
- Confirm the transfer case is actually commanded into low range and inspect for leaks, driveline damage, or signs the range change did not complete.
- Check transfer-case fluid level and condition according to the manufacturer's procedure.
- Use a scan tool to compare input and output speed data in low range with the expected reduction ratio and manufacturer's specification.
- If the signals and range selection are correct, inspect the transfer-case chain and planetary reduction gears for wear.
Common fixes
- Correct low or unsuitable transfer-case fluid according to the manufacturer's procedure.
- Repair wiring or connections affecting the transfer-case speed signals, if identified.
- Replace a stretched transfer-case chain.
- Repair or replace worn planetary reduction gears or the transfer case assembly.
Can I keep driving?
Do not rely on low range for steep, rough, or heavily loaded driving until the ratio fault is resolved. If low range makes unusual noise or behaves abnormally, disengage it when safe; continued operation can worsen chain or gear damage.
A code shows where the control module detected a fault, not always which part failed. Check the causes in order and confirm with a test before replacing parts. Have several codes? Check them together
This is a generic code: it means the same on every make. The car’s maker may add more detail in its own service information.
