OBD-II fault code

P2780: Downshift Switch Circuit Low

What it means

Voltage on the downshift switch line is below the expected window. Wiring faults of this kind typically come from chafing, water ingress at connector seals, or pin push-back — a wiggle test on the harness while the code is active often confirms the location.

At a glance

  • Usually lights the check-engine light

How it works

The downshift switch circuit carries the driver's request for a lower gear to the transmission control module. This code sets when the monitored signal is below the expected range, which can happen with a short to ground, a switch held in the pressed state, or excessive resistance at a corroded connection.

Common causes

Most likely first.

  1. Switch wire shorted to ground
  2. Switch stuck in pressed position
  3. Connector pins corroded - high contact resistance

Symptoms

  • Check engine or transmission warning light may be on
  • Downshift switch may not respond
  • Manual downshifts may be unavailable

How to diagnose it

  1. Read freeze-frame data and watch downshift-switch voltage or status on a scan tool with the switch released and pressed to confirm the low signal.
  2. Inspect the switch and connector for a stuck button, corrosion, moisture, or terminals pushed back from the connector face.
  3. Check the switch circuit wiring for a short to ground or chafing, and gently move the harness while watching live data for a change.
  4. Test the switch and circuit continuity using the manufacturer's procedure to distinguish a stuck switch from a wiring fault.
  5. If the switch and wiring pass, check the signal at the transmission control module connector and verify its grounds before considering a module fault.

Common fixes

  • Free or replace a downshift switch that remains pressed or has contaminated contacts.
  • Clean and secure corroded switch-connector terminals where appropriate.
  • Repair a shorted or chafed wire in the downshift switch circuit.
  • Replace the switch if it fails the manufacturer's continuity or signal test.
  • Repair the control module connection or module only if testing isolates the fault there.

Can I keep driving?

If the transmission shifts normally, cautious driving may be possible, but do not rely on the downshift switch or manual downshifts. Avoid situations where an unavailable lower gear would be needed for control, such as steep descents or overtaking.

A code shows where the control module detected a fault, not always which part failed. Check the causes in order and confirm with a test before replacing parts. Have several codes? Check them together

This is a generic code: it means the same on every make. The car’s maker may add more detail in its own service information.
