OBD-II fault code

P2779: Downshift Switch Circuit Range/Performance

What it means

The downshift switch signal is implausible. Stuck or noisy contacts. Wiring faults of this kind typically come from chafing, water ingress at connector seals, or pin push-back — a wiggle test on the harness while the code is active often confirms the location.

At a glance

  • Usually lights the check-engine light

How it works

The downshift switch tells the transmission control module when the driver requests a lower gear. The module compares the switch signal with the expected range and flags this code when it is implausible or unstable rather than consistently low or high.

Common causes

Most likely first.

  1. Contamination on switch contacts
  2. Worn switch contacts
  3. Sensor element aged beyond calibration window

Symptoms

  • Check engine or transmission warning light may be on
  • Downshifts may not respond to the switch
  • Manual shift mode may behave unpredictably

How to diagnose it

  1. Read freeze-frame data and watch the downshift-switch status on a scan tool while pressing and releasing the switch to see whether the signal changes smoothly.
  2. Inspect the switch and its connector for dirt, moisture, damaged seals, loose pins, or terminals pushed back from the connector face.
  3. Check the wiring between the switch and control module for chafing or damage, and gently move the harness while watching live switch data for dropouts.
  4. Test switch continuity and signal behavior through its operating range against the manufacturer's specification.
  5. If the switch and wiring pass, check the signal at the control-module connector and investigate the module only after confirming its power, grounds, and connections.

Common fixes

  • Clean contamination from the downshift-switch contacts if the switch design permits.
  • Repair loose, corroded, or damaged switch-connector terminals.
  • Repair chafed wiring or a poor connection in the switch circuit.
  • Replace the worn downshift switch if its signal remains implausible.
  • Replace or repair the control module only if circuit tests isolate the fault there.

Can I keep driving?

If the transmission shifts normally, cautious driving to a repair location may be possible, but avoid relying on the downshift switch or using manual mode. Unexpected or unavailable downshifts can reduce control on hills or during overtaking.

A code shows where the control module detected a fault, not always which part failed. Check the causes in order and confirm with a test before replacing parts. Have several codes? Check them together

This is a generic code: it means the same on every make. The car’s maker may add more detail in its own service information.
