What it means
Voltage on the exhaust flow control valve A control line is above the expected window. The exhaust control valve modulates exhaust backpressure or routing (EGR feed, sound, regen support); a malfunction shifts torque mapping and may trigger limp mode.
At a glance
- Usually lights the check-engine light
How it works
Exhaust flow control valve A regulates exhaust routing or backpressure for functions such as EGR feed, exhaust sound, or aftertreatment heating. P26C7 sets when the controller sees voltage on the valve A control line above its expected range, which can result from a short to battery voltage or an open solenoid circuit.
Common causes
Most likely first.
- Control wire shorted to B+
- Open solenoid coil
- Connector pins corroded - high contact resistance
Symptoms
- Check-engine light may be on
- Reduced engine power or altered response
- Exhaust or engine sound may change
- Emissions warning may appear
How to diagnose it
- Scan for related exhaust control codes and review freeze-frame data to identify when valve A circuit voltage was high.
- Inspect valve A wiring and connectors for contact with power wiring, heat damage, corrosion, or loose terminals.
- Check the valve A solenoid winding for an open circuit using the manufacturer's procedure and specification.
- Test the control wire for a short to battery voltage and check connector terminals for poor contact.
- If the wiring and solenoid pass, verify the controller output using the manufacturer's diagnostic procedure.
Common fixes
- Secure or repair wiring that has contacted a power feed.
- Repair loose or corroded valve A connector terminals.
- Replace valve A if its solenoid winding is open.
- Repair the controller circuit if its output is confirmed faulty.
Can I keep driving?
If power is reduced or an emissions warning appears, avoid heavy loads and arrange diagnosis soon. Driving with valve A control stuck outside its expected range can change exhaust flow and interfere with aftertreatment operation.
A code shows where the control module detected a fault, not always which part failed. Check the causes in order and confirm with a test before replacing parts. Have several codes? Check them together
This is a generic code: it means the same on every make. The car’s maker may add more detail in its own service information.
