OBD-II fault code

P2697: Exhaust Aftertreatment Fuel Injector A Circuit / Open

What it means

The 7th injector (HC dosing for DPF active regeneration) cannot be driven. Active regeneration cannot raise exhaust temperature, soot accumulates in the DPF.

At a glance

  • Usually lights the check-engine light
  • Affects emissions; the car can fail an emissions test

How it works

The exhaust aftertreatment fuel injector, sometimes called the seventh injector, doses fuel into the exhaust to help raise temperature during active DPF regeneration. P2697 sets when the controller detects an open electrical path in injector A's control circuit and cannot drive the injector as expected.

Common causes

Most likely first.

  1. Open coil in injector solenoid
  2. Broken control wire

Symptoms

  • Check-engine light
  • DPF warning light
  • More frequent or unsuccessful DPF regeneration

How to diagnose it

  1. Read freeze-frame data and DPF status to see whether regeneration attempts were active or repeatedly unsuccessful when the code set.
  2. Inspect injector A's connector and the visible control-wire harness for disconnection, damage, corrosion, or heat exposure.
  3. Check the injector circuit fuse or supply path if the vehicle's wiring information identifies one for this circuit.
  4. With the circuit safely de-energized as specified by the manufacturer, test the injector solenoid and wiring for an open circuit.
  5. If wiring and injector continuity are correct, diagnose the controller driver using the manufacturer's circuit procedure.

Common fixes

  • Reconnect or repair a loose, damaged, or broken injector A circuit connection.
  • Repair an open control wire using the vehicle's wiring repair procedure.
  • Replace injector A if its solenoid coil is open.
  • Repair the controller driver only after the injector and circuit have been verified.

Can I keep driving?

You can usually drive cautiously if the vehicle has no other severe symptoms, but avoid repeated short trips that prevent regeneration and heed any DPF warning or power restriction. Failed regeneration can let soot build up in the DPF and may eventually require service regeneration or filter repair.

A code shows where the control module detected a fault, not always which part failed. Check the causes in order and confirm with a test before replacing parts. Have several codes? Check them together

This is a generic code: it means the same on every make. The car’s maker may add more detail in its own service information.
