OBD-II fault code

P2672: Injection Pump Timing Offset

What it means

The high-pressure injection pump timing is offset from the expected reference. On distributor pumps with a timing solenoid, the actuator does not match the commanded position.

At a glance

  • Usually lights the check-engine light

How it works

Injection pump timing determines when the pump delivers fuel relative to engine position. The control module compares the pump's timing reference with the expected timing, and this code sets when the pump timing is offset; on distributor-pump systems with a timing solenoid, commanded and actual actuator position may not match.

Common causes

Most likely first.

  1. Worn timing actuator piston or seal
  2. Stretched pump drive chain or belt

Symptoms

  • Check-engine light
  • Hard starting
  • Rough running
  • Reduced power

How to diagnose it

  1. Record freeze-frame data and review live pump timing or timing-solenoid position data, if available, to establish whether the offset is present during starting or running.
  2. Inspect the pump timing actuator connector and wiring for loose contacts, corrosion, or damage that could prevent the commanded position from being reached.
  3. Check for related crankshaft or camshaft timing faults and verify the engine timing reference signals using the manufacturer's procedure.
  4. Inspect the pump drive belt or chain and its timing alignment for stretch, wear, or incorrect installation.
  5. If the drive timing and electrical controls check out, have pump timing and the actuator piston or seal assessed against the manufacturer's procedure.

Common fixes

  • Repair damaged wiring or a poor connection at the injection pump timing actuator.
  • Correct pump drive belt or chain timing if the reference is misaligned.
  • Replace a worn or stretched pump drive belt or chain.
  • Repair or replace a worn timing actuator piston or seal if it cannot achieve the commanded pump position.

Can I keep driving?

Hard starting, rough running, and reduced power can make the vehicle unreliable and may worsen if the pump drive timing continues to drift. Avoid long or demanding trips, and stop if the engine runs severely rough or loses power.

A code shows where the control module detected a fault, not always which part failed. Check the causes in order and confirm with a test before replacing parts. Have several codes? Check them together
