OBD-II fault code

P2657: A Rocker Arm Actuator System Stuck On Bank 2

What it means

The rocker arm actuator A on bank 2 stays in the activated state when commanded off.

At a glance

  • Usually lights the check-engine light

How it works

Rocker arm actuator A controls the valve lift mode on bank 2. This code sets when the controller commands the actuator off but detects that the mechanism remains engaged, so that bank can stay in the wrong lift mode.

Common causes

Most likely first.

  1. Mechanical lock pin stuck in activated position
  2. Oil control valve spool stuck open
  3. Carbon or debris buildup preventing free movement

Symptoms

  • Check-engine light
  • Reduced engine power or acceleration
  • Rough running or engine misfire

How to diagnose it

  1. Record freeze-frame data and check live actuator command and position data to confirm that bank 2 actuator A remains engaged after an off command.
  2. Inspect the bank 2 actuator A connector and wiring for damage or poor contact, and note any related circuit codes.
  3. Check the engine oil level and condition, since contaminated or unsuitable oil can contribute to a sticking control valve.
  4. Use the manufacturer's procedure to check the actuator control circuit and confirm it can be switched off electrically.
  5. If the circuit operates correctly, inspect the actuator spool and mechanical lock pin for sticking or debris.

Common fixes

  • Correct the oil level and replace contaminated or overdue oil and filter.
  • Repair a damaged or loose bank 2 actuator A connector or circuit wiring.
  • Clean or replace a rocker arm actuator with a spool stuck open.
  • Repair or replace the mechanism if its lock pin is stuck in the engaged position.

Can I keep driving?

Keep driving to a minimum if the engine has reduced power or runs roughly, and avoid heavy loads because bank 2 may remain in the wrong lift mode. Stop if misfiring becomes severe or the check-engine light flashes.

A code shows where the control module detected a fault, not always which part failed. Check the causes in order and confirm with a test before replacing parts. Have several codes? Check them together

This is a generic code: it means the same on every make. The car’s maker may add more detail in its own service information.
