OBD-II fault code

P25D3: Exhaust Camshaft Actuator Park Lock Control Circuit / Open Bank 2

What it means

The exhaust camshaft actuator park-lock circuit on bank 2 is detected as open. The code identifies an electrical circuit fault; it does not by itself establish that the phaser cannot lock or that the engine will run poorly.

At a glance

  • Usually lights the check-engine light

How it works

The exhaust camshaft actuator park-lock solenoid on bank 2 is part of the mechanism that holds the exhaust camshaft phaser in its parked position. The control module monitors the solenoid circuit and sets P25D3 when it detects an open electrical path; that does not prove the phaser itself cannot lock.

Common causes

Most likely first.

  1. Open coil in the park-lock solenoid
  2. Broken control wire between ECU and solenoid

Symptoms

  • Check engine light on
  • Power loss especially in mid-rpm range
  • Possible rough idle or stalling
  • Increased fuel consumption

How to diagnose it

  1. Save freeze-frame data and check related camshaft actuator codes to see when the bank 2 park-lock circuit fault occurred.
  2. Inspect the bank 2 exhaust camshaft actuator solenoid connector and harness for loose plugs, damage, or a broken wire.
  3. With the ignition off and the solenoid disconnected, check its coil for an open circuit using the manufacturer's test procedure.
  4. Check continuity through the control wire between the bank 2 solenoid connector and the control module, and check for unintended opens at terminals.
  5. If the wiring and solenoid pass, use the manufacturer's procedure to check the control module output and confirm the circuit fault.

Common fixes

  • Reconnect or repair a loose or damaged bank 2 solenoid connector.
  • Repair the open control wire between the solenoid and control module.
  • Replace the bank 2 park-lock solenoid if its coil is open.
  • Repair the control module circuit only if testing confirms an output fault.

Can I keep driving?

If the engine runs smoothly and the warning light is steady, a short, gentle drive may be possible, but avoid hard acceleration and high engine speeds. Stop if it stalls, runs very roughly, or loses significant power, since the camshaft may not park or operate as intended.

A code shows where the control module detected a fault, not always which part failed. Check the causes in order and confirm with a test before replacing parts. Have several codes? Check them together

This is a generic code: it means the same on every make. The car’s maker may add more detail in its own service information.
