What it means
Wastegate A is mechanically stuck closed. The turbo cannot bleed off exhaust at high load — boost overshoots the setpoint, risking overboost cut-off and damage to the turbo bearing. Carbon-locked flap, seized linkage or aged actuator are typical causes.
At a glance
- Usually lights the check-engine light
- Affects emissions; the car can fail an emissions test
How it works
Wastegate A opens to bypass exhaust around the turbine and limit boost at higher load. P25B4 means wastegate A is stuck closed, so the turbo cannot shed exhaust flow when needed and boost can exceed the commanded level, prompting a protective power reduction.
Common causes
Most likely first.
- Carbon-locked wastegate flap
- Seized linkage
- Carbon or debris buildup preventing free movement
Symptoms
- Check-engine light may come on
- Reduced engine power or boost may occur
How to diagnose it
- Record freeze-frame data and compare requested and actual boost around the event to check for pressure rising above the target.
- Inspect wastegate A’s actuator, linkage, and flap area for binding, carbon buildup, or visible damage with the engine cool.
- Check actuator hoses or electrical connectors and wiring, depending on the system type, for damage that could prevent the wastegate opening.
- With the engine off and following the manufacturer's procedure, check whether the wastegate A linkage moves freely without forcing it.
- Test actuator operation and boost control response against the manufacturer's procedure before replacing the turbocharger or actuator.
Common fixes
- Repair a disconnected or damaged wastegate A hose, connector, or wire.
- Free a binding wastegate A linkage if the manufacturer's procedure permits it.
- Remove carbon or debris from the wastegate mechanism using the specified service procedure.
- Replace a failed actuator that cannot open wastegate A.
- Replace the wastegate or turbocharger assembly if the flap remains mechanically stuck closed.
Can I keep driving?
Avoid hard acceleration, towing, and high-speed driving because a closed wastegate can cause excessive boost and trigger power cuts or engine damage. If power drops sharply or the engine makes unusual noises, stop driving and arrange inspection.
A code shows where the control module detected a fault, not always which part failed. Check the causes in order and confirm with a test before replacing parts. Have several codes? Check them together
This is a generic code: it means the same on every make. The car’s maker may add more detail in its own service information.
