OBD-II fault code

P25B3: Turbocharger/Supercharger Wastegate A Stuck Open

What it means

Wastegate A is mechanically stuck open. Exhaust gas bypasses the turbine even at low load — turbo cannot reach target speed, boost is permanently low and the engine feels asthmatic. Common causes are seized linkage, broken return spring or carbon-locked wastegate flap.

At a glance

  • Usually lights the check-engine light
  • Affects emissions; the car can fail an emissions test

How it works

Wastegate A controls how much exhaust bypasses the turbocharger or supercharger turbine. P25B3 indicates that wastegate A is stuck open, allowing exhaust to bypass the turbine when the module is requesting boost; the turbo may then fail to reach its target speed and pressure.

Common causes

Most likely first.

  1. Seized wastegate linkage
  2. Broken return spring
  3. Carbon or debris buildup preventing free movement

Symptoms

  • Check-engine light may come on
  • Reduced engine power or boost may occur

How to diagnose it

  1. Record freeze-frame data and compare requested boost with actual boost to confirm that pressure is low when load rises.
  2. Inspect the wastegate A actuator, linkage, and return spring for damage, disconnection, or visible binding once the engine is cool.
  3. Check the relevant hoses, wiring, or actuator connector for leaks or damage if the wastegate A system uses pneumatic or electronic control.
  4. With the engine off and following the manufacturer's safety procedure, check whether wastegate A’s linkage moves freely through its range.
  5. Test the actuator and compare its response with the manufacturer's procedure and specification before removing the turbocharger.

Common fixes

  • Reconnect or repair loose wastegate A linkage or actuator connections.
  • Free a binding wastegate A linkage if it is safe and serviceable.
  • Replace a broken wastegate A return spring.
  • Clean carbon or debris from the wastegate mechanism if the manufacturer's procedure allows it.
  • Replace a failed actuator or wastegate assembly if testing confirms it is stuck open.

Can I keep driving?

You can often drive gently if the engine runs smoothly, but expect reduced power and avoid overtaking, towing, or entering fast traffic where acceleration is needed. Stop if the engine develops unusual noise, smoke, or an overheating warning.

A code shows where the control module detected a fault, not always which part failed. Check the causes in order and confirm with a test before replacing parts. Have several codes? Check them together

This is a generic code: it means the same on every make. The car’s maker may add more detail in its own service information.
