OBD-II fault code

P2561: A/C Control Module Requested MIL Illumination

What it means

The A/C / HVAC control module has requested the ECM to illuminate the malfunction indicator (MIL) because of an emissions-relevant fault on its side. The original fault is stored in the HVAC module — this code only signals that the ECM has honoured the request.

At a glance

  • Usually lights the check-engine light
  • Affects emissions; the car can fail an emissions test

How it works

The A/C control module can ask the engine control module to turn on the malfunction indicator lamp when it detects a fault that it reports as emissions relevant. This code records that request; it does not identify the underlying A/C or HVAC fault that prompted it.

Common causes

Most likely first.

  1. A/C control module fault requesting MIL illumination
  2. A/C system fault stored in the control module
  3. Communication or wiring fault between the A/C module and engine controller

Symptoms

  • Check-engine light
  • A/C system warning or reduced A/C operation, depending on vehicle

How to diagnose it

  1. Save freeze-frame and code information, then scan the A/C or HVAC control module for its own stored fault codes.
  2. Check whether the A/C control module reports a specific system fault or warning that corresponds with the MIL request.
  3. Inspect the wiring and connectors between the A/C module and engine module for damage, corrosion, or loose terminals.
  4. Check module communication and request status with a scan tool to confirm that the A/C module is still asking for MIL illumination.
  5. Diagnose the underlying A/C module code using the manufacturer's procedure before clearing the MIL request.

Common fixes

  • Repair the A/C or HVAC fault identified in the source module's stored codes.
  • Repair loose, corroded, or damaged communication wiring between the A/C and engine modules.
  • Restore module communication if a verified connector or network fault is present.
  • Replace or reprogram a control module only if diagnosis confirms it is faulty and the manufacturer specifies that remedy.

Can I keep driving?

Driving is generally possible if the vehicle has no other warning signs, though A/C operation may be reduced and the MIL will remain on. Check for additional engine or HVAC warnings, since this code alone does not reveal the fault that triggered the request.

A code shows where the control module detected a fault, not always which part failed. Check the causes in order and confirm with a test before replacing parts. Have several codes? Check them together

This is a generic code: it means the same on every make. The car’s maker may add more detail in its own service information.
