What it means
The coolant level monitor reports the engine coolant below the safe minimum after sensor checks pass. Continued operation risks overheating, head warping and head-gasket failure. The driver is warned and the ECM may reduce engine power until the level is restored.
At a glance
- Usually lights the check-engine light
How it works
The engine coolant level monitor reports whether coolant in the cooling system is above its minimum level. This code sets when the monitor detects a low level after its own checks pass, indicating that the engine may no longer have enough coolant to control temperature safely.
Common causes
Most likely first.
- External coolant leak (hose, radiator, water pump)
- Missed top-up since last service
- Head gasket leaking coolant into combustion
Symptoms
- Check-engine light or low-coolant warning
- Coolant level below the recommended minimum
- Engine temperature may rise if coolant loss continues
How to diagnose it
- When the engine is completely cool, check the coolant level in the reservoir and compare it with the vehicle's marked range.
- Inspect hoses, radiator, reservoir, and water pump area for wetness, dried coolant residue, or visible leaks.
- Check the coolant level sensor and its connector for contamination, damage, or a loose connection that could affect the reading.
- If coolant is below the minimum, top it up with the specified coolant and monitor the level and engine temperature for further loss.
- If the level drops again without an external leak, have the cooling system and engine checked for an internal coolant leak, including a possible head-gasket leak.
Common fixes
- Top up the system with the vehicle-specified coolant when the engine is cool.
- Replace a leaking hose, clamp, reservoir, radiator, or water pump as indicated by inspection.
- Repair the coolant level sensor connector or wiring if it is damaged.
- Replace a faulty coolant level sensor if the level is correct but the reading remains low.
- Repair an internal coolant leak if testing confirms coolant is entering the engine.
Can I keep driving?
Do not continue driving if the engine temperature rises, a temperature warning appears, or coolant is leaking rapidly; stop safely and let the engine cool. Driving with too little coolant can cause severe overheating and engine damage, and never open a hot cooling system.
A code shows where the control module detected a fault, not always which part failed. Check the causes in order and confirm with a test before replacing parts. Have several codes? Check them together
This is a generic code: it means the same on every make. The car’s maker may add more detail in its own service information.
