OBD-II fault code

P255C: PTO Speed Selector Sensor/Switch 2 Circuit Low

What it means

PTO speed selector 2 input reads stuck low — short to ground or analog signal pegged at minimum. Wiring faults of this kind typically come from chafing, water ingress at connector seals, or pin push-back — a wiggle test on the harness while the code is active often confirms the location.

At a glance

  • Usually lights the check-engine light

How it works

PTO speed selector switch 2 provides the control module with the selected PTO speed. This code sets when the input for switch 2 stays below its expected electrical range, such as from a signal wire grounded or a failed connection.

Common causes

Most likely first.

  1. Switch wire shorted to ground
  2. Connector pins corroded - high contact resistance
  3. Harness chafing through insulation

Symptoms

  • Check-engine light
  • PTO speed selection may be unavailable or incorrect
  • PTO operation may be limited

How to diagnose it

  1. Save freeze-frame data and check PTO selector 2 live data with the selector moved through its positions to confirm whether the input remains at its lowest reading.
  2. With the PTO disengaged, inspect switch 2 and its harness for crushed insulation, chafing, moisture, or contact with a grounded surface.
  3. Check the switch 2 connector for corrosion, loose terminals, and pins pushed back from their normal position.
  4. Wiggle the harness near the selector and connectors while watching the live input to see whether the reading changes.
  5. Measure the signal and reference circuits for shorts to ground or an open supply, following the manufacturer's specification.

Common fixes

  • Clean and dry the selector 2 connector and restore its seal if water has entered.
  • Repair chafed or pinched wiring that is grounding the switch 2 signal.
  • Repair corroded, loose, or pushed-back connector terminals.
  • Replace selector switch 2 if its output stays low with the wiring and supply confirmed good.

Can I keep driving?

The vehicle may remain drivable, but PTO speed selection can be unavailable or wrong. Do not operate equipment that depends on a confirmed PTO speed until the fault is repaired.

A code shows where the control module detected a fault, not always which part failed. Check the causes in order and confirm with a test before replacing parts. Have several codes? Check them together

This is a generic code: it means the same on every make. The car’s maker may add more detail in its own service information.
