OBD-II fault code

P255B: PTO Speed Selector Sensor/Switch 2 Range/Performance

What it means

PTO speed selector switch 2 is electrically intact but its value does not match a valid bit pattern — multiple positions asserted, or values that do not map to any preset.

At a glance

  • Usually lights the check-engine light

How it works

PTO selector switch 2 tells the control module which power take-off speed the operator has selected. The module checks whether the switch’s position signals form a valid selection; this code sets when the signals are electrically present but do not correspond to a recognized setting.

Common causes

Most likely first.

  1. Contaminated rotary contact
  2. Sensor element aged beyond calibration window
  3. Sensor mounting loose - signal damping

Symptoms

  • Check-engine light
  • PTO speed selection may be incorrect or unavailable
  • PTO operation may be limited

How to diagnose it

  1. Record freeze-frame data and watch PTO selector 2 live data while moving the control through each marked position to identify which selections are missing or implausible.
  2. With the vehicle safely parked and PTO disengaged, inspect selector 2 for dirt, moisture, looseness, or wear that could disrupt its rotary contact.
  3. Check the selector’s mounting and linkage for movement or vibration that could keep the switch between defined positions.
  4. Inspect the selector 2 connector and wiring for corrosion, backed-out pins, loose terminals, or chafing.
  5. Test the switch output and related circuit across each selector position against the manufacturer's specification to distinguish a worn contact from a wiring fault.

Common fixes

  • Clean contamination from the selector contact area if the switch design allows it.
  • Secure the selector and its mounting so it stays aligned at each position.
  • Repair loose, corroded, or damaged connector terminals and wiring.
  • Replace PTO speed selector switch 2 if its output remains outside the specified position patterns.

Can I keep driving?

Avoid relying on the PTO until the selected speed is confirmed, since it may be unavailable or incorrect. If the PTO is needed for work, stop using it and have the selector checked before operating the equipment.

A code shows where the control module detected a fault, not always which part failed. Check the causes in order and confirm with a test before replacing parts. Have several codes? Check them together

This is a generic code: it means the same on every make. The car’s maker may add more detail in its own service information.
