What it means
Same as P24AE with intermittent or erratic signal. Wiring faults of this kind typically come from chafing, water ingress at connector seals, or pin push-back — a wiggle test on the harness while the code is active often confirms the location.
At a glance
- Usually lights the check-engine light
- Affects emissions; the car can fail an emissions test
How it works
The exhaust PM sensor reports particulate loading through a signal circuit monitored by the control module. This code sets when that signal becomes erratic or drops in and out, often because vibration moves a weak connector contact or a poorly routed harness.
Common causes
Most likely first.
- Intermittent contact at connector
- Connector with intermittent contact under vibration
- Harness routed against vibrating component
Symptoms
- Check-engine light on
- Possible emissions warning
- Possible reduced engine power
How to diagnose it
- Record freeze-frame data and check scan-tool history for conditions such as vibration or temperature when the PM signal became erratic.
- Inspect the PM sensor connector for loose fit, corrosion, moisture, and pins that may have backed out.
- Follow the harness and look for chafing or contact with a vibrating exhaust or engine component.
- With live PM sensor data displayed, gently wiggle the connector and harness to see whether the signal or fault status changes.
- If movement does not reproduce the fault, test circuit continuity and sensor operation using the manufacturer's procedure.
Common fixes
- Secure the harness away from vibrating components.
- Repair chafed or strained wiring.
- Clean and tighten the connector terminals or replace damaged terminals.
- Replace the PM sensor if its signal remains intermittent with sound wiring and connections.
Can I keep driving?
A short drive may be possible if the vehicle behaves normally, but avoid demanding driving if power reduction appears. The intermittent reading can prevent reliable particulate monitoring and may cause an emissions warning.
A code shows where the control module detected a fault, not always which part failed. Check the causes in order and confirm with a test before replacing parts. Have several codes? Check them together
This is a generic code: it means the same on every make. The car’s maker may add more detail in its own service information.
