What it means
A general circuit fault on the particulate matter (PM) sensor - measures soot in the exhaust downstream of the DPF to verify regeneration.
At a glance
- Usually lights the check-engine light
- Affects emissions; the car can fail an emissions test
How it works
The particulate matter sensor measures soot in the exhaust downstream of the diesel particulate filter, giving the control module information used to check filter performance and regeneration. P24AE indicates a general electrical circuit fault in the sensor circuit, which may prevent the module from receiving a usable measurement. The code does not by itself identify whether the sensor, wiring, connector, power, or ground has failed.
Common causes
Most likely first.
- Faulty particulate-matter sensor
- Open or damaged sensor wiring
- Loose or corroded connector
- Blown fuse or sensor power or ground fault
Symptoms
- Check-engine light on
- Possible emissions warning
- Possible reduced engine power
How to diagnose it
- Record freeze-frame data and review any available particulate-matter sensor readings and related DPF or regeneration codes.
- Inspect the downstream PM sensor, its connector, and nearby exhaust wiring for damage, looseness, corrosion, or heat exposure.
- Check the sensor fuse and verify its power and ground feeds using the manufacturer's circuit information.
- Test the sensor wiring for opens or shorts and check connector terminal fit before replacing the sensor.
- If the circuit and feeds are intact, test the PM sensor according to the manufacturer's procedure.
Common fixes
- Reconnect and secure the PM sensor connector.
- Repair heat-damaged or open sensor wiring.
- Clean or replace corroded connector terminals.
- Replace a blown sensor fuse after checking for the cause.
- Replace the PM sensor if its circuit tests confirm an internal fault.
Can I keep driving?
You can generally make a short, gentle trip if the engine runs normally, but avoid ignoring the warning because the vehicle may not monitor DPF performance or regeneration correctly. Reduced power or additional emissions faults may develop.
A code shows where the control module detected a fault, not always which part failed. Check the causes in order and confirm with a test before replacing parts. Have several codes? Check them together
This is a generic code: it means the same on every make. The car’s maker may add more detail in its own service information.
