OBD-II fault code

P2484: Exhaust Gas Temperature Sensor Circuit Intermittent or Erratic Bank 1 Sensor 5

What it means

Same as P242E on bank 1 sensor 5. Wiring faults of this kind typically come from chafing, water ingress at connector seals, or pin push-back — a wiggle test on the harness while the code is active often confirms the location.

At a glance

  • Usually lights the check-engine light
  • Affects emissions; the car can fail an emissions test

How it works

Bank 1 sensor 5 sends exhaust-temperature readings to the control module through its sensor circuit. P2484 is set when that signal becomes intermittent or erratic, so a loose contact or harness movement can cause the reading to jump even if it appears normal at other times.

Common causes

Most likely first.

  1. Intermittent contact at connector
  2. Connector with intermittent contact under vibration
  3. Harness routed against vibrating component

Symptoms

  • Check-engine light on

How to diagnose it

  1. Record freeze-frame data and check bank 1 sensor 5 live data for sudden jumps or dropouts that coincide with the fault.
  2. Inspect the bank 1 sensor 5 connector for looseness, corrosion, moisture, or terminals that may not grip properly.
  3. Check whether the harness is routed against a vibrating or hot component and look for chafing or damaged insulation.
  4. While monitoring live data, gently move the bank 1 sensor 5 harness and connector to see whether the reading becomes erratic.
  5. If movement does not reveal the fault, test the sensor circuit and sensor connections under the manufacturer's procedures and specification.

Common fixes

  • Secure the bank 1 sensor 5 connector and route the harness away from vibration or heat.
  • Repair chafed or damaged bank 1 sensor 5 wiring.
  • Clean or replace connector terminals with intermittent contact.
  • Replace bank 1 sensor 5 if its signal remains erratic after wiring and connector checks.

Can I keep driving?

If only the check-engine light is on and the vehicle runs normally, a short drive is generally reasonable, but arrange diagnosis soon because the fault may come and go. Stop driving if the engine loses power or develops other serious symptoms.

A code shows where the control module detected a fault, not always which part failed. Check the causes in order and confirm with a test before replacing parts. Have several codes? Check them together

This is a generic code: it means the same on every make. The car’s maker may add more detail in its own service information.
