What it means
The control module detects a high signal in the fuel cap sensor or switch circuit. This is an electrical circuit fault, not a general open-or-short description.
At a glance
- Usually lights the check-engine light
- Affects emissions; the car can fail an emissions test
How it works
A fuel cap sensor or switch reports cap status to the control module as part of the fuel-system and emissions checks. P2411 sets when the module sees a signal higher than expected in that sensor or switch circuit, such as when the signal wire is open; it does not simply mean the cap is loose.
Common causes
Most likely first.
- Signal wire open
- Cap switch failed
Symptoms
- Check-engine light on
- Fuel-cap warning, if equipped
How to diagnose it
- Record freeze-frame data and check for related fuel-cap or EVAP codes to see when the high circuit signal was detected.
- Inspect the fuel cap sensor or switch connector and nearby wiring for disconnection, corrosion, damage, or a broken signal wire.
- Use live data, if available, to see whether fuel-cap status stays in one state or changes while the connector and harness are gently moved.
- With the wiring diagram, check the circuit for continuity and shorts, and compare the signal readings with the manufacturer's specification.
- Test the cap switch or sensor and its power and ground circuits against the manufacturer's specification before replacing parts.
Common fixes
- Reconnect or secure a loose fuel-cap sensor connector.
- Repair an open, damaged, or corroded signal wire or terminal.
- Replace a failed fuel cap sensor or switch.
- Clear the code and confirm the cap-status signal and emissions monitor operate normally.
Can I keep driving?
The vehicle will usually remain driveable, but the fuel-cap warning or emissions self-check may not work correctly. Arrange diagnosis soon and make sure the cap is properly fitted; the code alone does not show that fuel is leaking.
A code shows where the control module detected a fault, not always which part failed. Check the causes in order and confirm with a test before replacing parts. Have several codes? Check them together
This is a generic code: it means the same on every make. The car’s maker may add more detail in its own service information.
