What it means
The control module detects an electrical fault in the fuel cap sensor or switch circuit. This code does not by itself indicate that the cap is loose.
At a glance
- Usually lights the check-engine light
- Affects emissions; the car can fail an emissions test
How it works
A fuel-cap sensor or switch reports cap-related status to the control module, often as part of EVAP monitoring. P2408 sets when the module detects an electrical fault in that sensor or switch circuit. It does not prove the cap is loose or incorrectly fitted.
Common causes
Most likely first.
- Faulty fuel cap sensor or switch
- Open or shorted wiring
- Poor connector contact
Symptoms
- Check-engine light on
- Fuel-cap warning, if equipped
How to diagnose it
- Check freeze-frame data and read fuel-cap status, if available, to see whether the circuit is reporting a consistent state.
- Inspect the cap and its sensor or switch for damage, then check the connector for moisture, corrosion, or poor contact.
- Trace the sensor or switch wiring for breaks, pinching, or insulation damage that could cause an open or short.
- With the circuit isolated as specified by the manufacturer, check wiring continuity and for shorts to ground or supply.
- Test the fuel-cap sensor or switch operation against the manufacturer's specification.
Common fixes
- Clean and secure a poor sensor or switch connector.
- Repair an open or shorted section of wiring.
- Replace a faulty fuel-cap sensor or switch.
- Replace a damaged cap assembly if its sensor or switch is integrated.
Can I keep driving?
If the vehicle runs normally and there is no fuel odor or visible leak, short-term driving is generally possible. The fault may disable EVAP monitoring and can leave a fuel-cap warning on; stop and investigate if you notice fuel leakage or strong fumes.
A code shows where the control module detected a fault, not always which part failed. Check the causes in order and confirm with a test before replacing parts. Have several codes? Check them together
This is a generic code: it means the same on every make. The car’s maker may add more detail in its own service information.
