What it means
The control module detects a high signal in the EVAP leak detection pump control circuit. This is an electrical fault; the code alone does not establish the cause.
At a glance
- Usually lights the check-engine light
- Affects emissions; the car can fail an emissions test
How it works
The control module uses the EVAP leak detection pump control circuit to command the pump during fuel-vapour leak tests. This code sets when the circuit signal is higher than expected, which may happen if the control wire is shorted to supply or the pump's ground path is open.
Common causes
Most likely first.
- Drive line shorted to supply
- Pump ground open
- Connector pins corroded - high contact resistance
Symptoms
- Check engine light on
How to diagnose it
- Record freeze-frame data and determine whether the code appears when the control module commands the leak detection pump.
- Inspect the pump connector and harness for a loose ground, damaged insulation, or a control wire touching a power source.
- Check the pump ground connection and control signal while commanding the pump, using the manufacturer's test procedure.
- With the circuit isolated as specified by the manufacturer, check the control wire for a short to supply.
- If wiring and grounds pass, test the pump and module control circuit against the manufacturer's specification.
Common fixes
- Restore a loose or corroded pump ground connection.
- Repair control-wire insulation damaged where it contacts a power source.
- Repair a confirmed short to supply or damaged pump connector.
- Replace the leak detection pump if testing confirms its internal fault.
Can I keep driving?
This electrical fault usually does not change how the vehicle drives, so normal driving is generally possible. The EVAP leak test may not run, increasing emissions and potentially preventing an emissions inspection from passing.
A code shows where the control module detected a fault, not always which part failed. Check the causes in order and confirm with a test before replacing parts. Have several codes? Check them together
This is a generic code: it means the same on every make. The car’s maker may add more detail in its own service information.
