What it means
The control module detects a low signal in the EVAP leak detection pump control circuit. This is an electrical fault; the code alone does not establish the cause.
At a glance
- Usually lights the check-engine light
- Affects emissions; the car can fail an emissions test
How it works
The control module switches the EVAP leak detection pump through its control circuit during fuel-vapour leak checks. This code sets when the control-circuit signal is lower than expected, which can result from a short to ground, a pump fault, or a poor connection.
Common causes
Most likely first.
- Drive line shorted to ground
- Pump internal short
- Connector pins corroded - high contact resistance
Symptoms
- Check engine light on
How to diagnose it
- Record freeze-frame data and check whether the code returns when the leak detection pump is commanded during an EVAP test.
- Inspect the pump connector and control-wire harness for corrosion, damaged insulation, or contact with ground.
- Check pump power and ground connections and the control signal while commanding the pump, following the manufacturer's procedure.
- With the circuit safely isolated as specified by the manufacturer, check the control wire for a short to ground.
- If no wiring short or connection fault is found, test the pump and module control circuit against the manufacturer's specification.
Common fixes
- Clean corroded pump connector terminals and restore firm contact.
- Repair control-wire insulation chafed through to ground.
- Repair a confirmed pump control circuit short or damaged connector.
- Replace the leak detection pump if its internal fault is confirmed by testing.
Can I keep driving?
The low control signal usually does not affect engine operation, so driving is generally possible. The EVAP monitor may not complete, increasing emissions and potentially preventing an emissions inspection from passing.
A code shows where the control module detected a fault, not always which part failed. Check the causes in order and confirm with a test before replacing parts. Have several codes? Check them together
This is a generic code: it means the same on every make. The car’s maker may add more detail in its own service information.
