OBD-II fault code

P2397: Diesel Intake Air Flow B Position Sensor Range or Performance

What it means

Same as P2396 with the signal in plausible range yet not matching the actuator command.

At a glance

  • Usually lights the check-engine light
  • Affects emissions; the car can fail an emissions test

How it works

The position sensor on diesel intake air flow valve B reports valve movement to the control module. This code sets when the signal remains electrically plausible but the reported position does not track the commanded movement, suggesting drift, sticking, or linkage play.

Common causes

Most likely first.

  1. Position sensor B signal drift or fault
  2. Intake air flow valve sticking or linkage wear
  3. Loose, corroded, or damaged wiring or connector

Symptoms

  • Check-engine light on
  • Possible reduced engine power or sluggish response

How to diagnose it

  1. Record freeze-frame data and graph commanded versus actual valve B position during a scan-tool movement test, if available.
  2. Inspect valve B and its linkage for soot, binding, looseness, or wear that could cause actual movement to lag the command.
  3. Check the position-sensor connector and harness for corrosion, loose terminals, or intermittent contact.
  4. Move or command valve B through its range while watching for smooth, consistent position feedback rather than sudden jumps or lag.
  5. If the valve moves freely but feedback remains inaccurate, test the position sensor and circuit against the manufacturer’s specification.

Common fixes

  • Clean deposits that cause valve B to stick, following the approved procedure.
  • Repair worn or loose valve B linkage.
  • Repair damaged wiring or poor connector contacts affecting position feedback.
  • Replace the valve B position sensor if its signal drifts despite smooth valve movement.

Can I keep driving?

Sluggish acceleration or reduced power may worsen when the valve position fails to track its command. Keep engine load modest and avoid overtaking until the valve and feedback are working correctly.

A code shows where the control module detected a fault, not always which part failed. Check the causes in order and confirm with a test before replacing parts. Have several codes? Check them together

This is a generic code: it means the same on every make. The car’s maker may add more detail in its own service information.
