OBD-II fault code

P239A: Diesel Intake Air Flow B Position Sensor Circuit Intermittent or Erratic

What it means

Same as P2396 with intermittent or erratic signal. Wiring faults of this kind typically come from chafing, water ingress at connector seals, or pin push-back — a wiggle test on the harness while the code is active often confirms the location.

At a glance

  • Usually lights the check-engine light
  • Affects emissions; the car can fail an emissions test

How it works

The diesel intake air flow B position sensor tells the control module how far valve B has moved. The module monitors whether that signal changes consistently; this code sets when the reading becomes intermittent or erratic instead of tracking position reliably.

Common causes

Most likely first.

  1. Intermittent contact at connector
  2. Connector with intermittent contact under vibration
  3. Harness routed against vibrating component

Symptoms

  • Check-engine light on
  • Possible reduced engine power or sluggish response

How to diagnose it

  1. Review freeze-frame data and live B position readings for dropouts or sudden jumps, noting engine speed and vibration when they occur.
  2. Inspect the B sensor connector and harness for loose or corroded terminals, damaged seals, chafing, or routing against a vibrating part.
  3. With live data displayed, gently wiggle the connector and harness while the engine is safely stationary to see whether the signal drops out.
  4. Check the B sensor wiring, supply, and ground for intermittent continuity or poor terminal contact using the wiring diagram.
  5. If the circuit remains stable, compare sensor readings with actual valve movement and the manufacturer's specification to distinguish a sensor fault from binding linkage.

Common fixes

  • Secure the harness away from vibrating or rubbing components.
  • Clean and tighten an intermittent connector, or replace damaged terminals and seals.
  • Repair chafed or broken wiring in the B sensor circuit.
  • Replace the B position sensor if its signal remains erratic with stable wiring and connections.

Can I keep driving?

A brief drive may be reasonable if the engine remains predictable, but avoid heavy loads and stop if power loss or stalling develops. An intermittent position signal can disrupt intake-air control and may cause worsening drivability.

A code shows where the control module detected a fault, not always which part failed. Check the causes in order and confirm with a test before replacing parts. Have several codes? Check them together

This is a generic code: it means the same on every make. The car’s maker may add more detail in its own service information.
