What it means
The cylinder 2 alternative-fuel injector control circuit has a voltage above the expected range. This indicates an electrical circuit fault, not necessarily an injector flow problem or short to battery.
At a glance
- Usually lights the check-engine light
- Affects emissions; the car can fail an emissions test
How it works
The cylinder 2 alternative-fuel injector meters secondary fuel into that cylinder on a bi-fuel vehicle. The control module monitors its drive circuit and sets this code when circuit voltage is above the expected range; this indicates an electrical fault but does not prove a short to battery voltage.
Common causes
Most likely first.
- Short to B+
- Connector pins corroded - high contact resistance
- Supply wire pinched against B+ source
Symptoms
- Check engine light on
- Misfire or rough idle on the affected cylinder
- Increased fuel consumption
- Possible fuel smell or smoke from exhaust
How to diagnose it
- Check freeze-frame data and misfire counts, and determine whether cylinder 2 was using alternative fuel when the fault occurred.
- Inspect the cylinder 2 injector connector and harness for corrosion, damaged pins, or a supply wire pinched against a battery-positive source.
- Test for a short to battery voltage and check circuit continuity using the manufacturer's procedure.
- Test the injector winding against the manufacturer's specification to separate an injector fault from a harness fault.
- If the injector and wiring pass, test the control-module driver and connections according to the manufacturer's diagnostic procedure.
Common fixes
- Repair wiring pinched against a battery-positive source or otherwise shorted to power.
- Repair corroded or damaged connector pins at the cylinder 2 injector.
- Replace the cylinder 2 injector if its electrical test is outside the manufacturer's specification.
- Repair the control-module driver circuit if testing confirms the fault is there.
Can I keep driving?
Avoid alternative-fuel operation if cylinder 2 is misfiring, since unburned fuel can damage the catalytic converter. If the engine runs smoothly on its other fuel, drive gently only as needed and follow the vehicle's fuel-switching instructions.
A code shows where the control module detected a fault, not always which part failed. Check the causes in order and confirm with a test before replacing parts. Have several codes? Check them together
This is a generic code: it means the same on every make. The car’s maker may add more detail in its own service information.
