What it means
The turbine inlet valve position sensor signal is intermittent or erratic. The fault concerns signal stability, not a confirmed boost-pressure deviation.
At a glance
- Usually lights the check-engine light
How it works
The turbine inlet valve regulates airflow into the turbocharger turbine, while its position sensor reports valve movement to the engine control module. This code sets when the sensor signal becomes unstable or erratic; it indicates an intermittent signal problem, not proof of a boost-pressure fault.
Common causes
Most likely first.
- Intermittent connector
- Connector with intermittent contact under vibration
- Harness routed against vibrating component
Symptoms
- Check engine light on
- Significant power loss / limp mode
- Possible blue or black smoke from exhaust
- Whistling or hissing sound from intake
How to diagnose it
- Save freeze-frame data and review live valve command and position readings for dropouts or sudden jumps.
- Inspect the sensor connector for looseness, damaged locks, corrosion, or pins that may lose contact with vibration.
- Follow the sensor harness and look for rubbing, tension, or contact with a vibrating or hot component.
- While monitoring the signal, gently move the connector and harness to check whether the reading cuts out.
- If the fault persists, test the sensor signal and wiring continuity under the manufacturer's procedure before considering a sensor or module fault.
Common fixes
- Secure a loose connector and repair damaged connector locks or terminals.
- Repair or replace wiring damaged by rubbing or vibration.
- Reroute and secure the harness away from vibrating components.
- Replace the position sensor if its signal remains erratic with sound wiring.
- Repair the control-module circuit only if testing confirms the fault is there.
Can I keep driving?
If power loss or limp mode occurs, avoid overtaking and heavy acceleration because the vehicle may not respond normally. Limit driving and stop if smoke or intake noise becomes pronounced.
A code shows where the control module detected a fault, not always which part failed. Check the causes in order and confirm with a test before replacing parts. Have several codes? Check them together
This is a generic code: it means the same on every make. The car’s maker may add more detail in its own service information.
