What it means
The turbine inlet valve position sensor circuit voltage is above the expected range. This indicates an electrical signal fault, but does not by itself identify an open signal or short to battery.
At a glance
- Usually lights the check-engine light
How it works
The turbine inlet valve controls airflow into the turbocharger turbine, and its position sensor reports how far the valve has moved. The engine control module monitors the sensor circuit voltage; this code sets when that signal is higher than the expected range, without identifying whether the cause is an open signal wire or contact with battery voltage.
Common causes
Most likely first.
- Open signal line
- Connector pins corroded - high contact resistance
- Supply wire pinched against B+ source
Symptoms
- Check engine light on
- Significant power loss / limp mode
- Possible blue or black smoke from exhaust
- Whistling or hissing sound from intake
How to diagnose it
- Record freeze-frame data and compare the turbine inlet valve position reading with the commanded position to see when the high signal occurred.
- Inspect the valve sensor connector and nearby wiring for corrosion, loose or damaged pins, and a wire pinched against a battery-positive source.
- Check the signal wire for continuity and inspect for an open between the sensor and control module.
- With the wiring isolated as specified by the manufacturer, check whether the signal wire is shorted to battery voltage.
- If the wiring and connections pass, test the sensor and control-module circuit against the manufacturer's diagnostic procedure.
Common fixes
- Repair an open or damaged position-sensor signal wire.
- Clean or repair corroded or damaged connector pins and secure the connector.
- Repair wiring pinched against a battery-positive source.
- Replace a faulty turbine inlet valve position sensor if testing confirms it.
- Repair the control-module circuit only if the manufacturer's tests identify it as the cause.
Can I keep driving?
Significant power loss or limp mode can make merging and overtaking unsafe, so avoid hard acceleration and demanding trips. Stop if smoke increases or the whistling or hissing worsens, and arrange diagnosis soon.
A code shows where the control module detected a fault, not always which part failed. Check the causes in order and confirm with a test before replacing parts. Have several codes? Check them together
This is a generic code: it means the same on every make. The car’s maker may add more detail in its own service information.
