What it means
The drive circuit for the turbocharger compressor outlet switching valve is open. On twin-turbo or sequential boost setups, this valve routes the compressor outlet between low-pressure and high-pressure stages.
At a glance
- Usually lights the check-engine light
How it works
The compressor outlet switching valve routes airflow between compressor stages on systems with staged or twin turbochargers. The control module monitors its drive circuit, and this code sets when it detects an open electrical path, such as an open solenoid winding or disconnected wire.
Common causes
Most likely first.
- Solenoid winding open
- Pin pushed back out of connector body
- Cracked solder joint inside the module or sensor
Symptoms
- Check engine light on
- Reduced engine power or poor acceleration
- Delayed or inconsistent boost response
How to diagnose it
- Record freeze-frame data and check for related turbocharger codes to identify when the switching valve was commanded.
- Locate the compressor outlet switching valve using vehicle service information, then inspect its connector for a backed-out pin or corrosion.
- Trace the valve harness for a break, loose connection, or damaged wiring.
- Test the valve winding and circuit continuity according to the manufacturer's procedure.
- If the winding and harness pass, check the module connector and switching-valve output using the specified test.
Common fixes
- Reseat a pushed-back connector pin and secure the connector.
- Repair an open or damaged wire in the switching-valve circuit.
- Replace the switching valve if its winding is open.
- Repair a confirmed open connection at the control module.
Can I keep driving?
If the engine runs normally, a gentle drive to a repair location may be possible, but avoid hard acceleration and heavy loads. Staged boost may be unavailable or unpredictable, reducing power when you need to accelerate.
A code shows where the control module detected a fault, not always which part failed. Check the causes in order and confirm with a test before replacing parts. Have several codes? Check them together
This is a generic code: it means the same on every make. The car’s maker may add more detail in its own service information.
