OBD-II fault code

P22C5: Turbocharger Compressor Outlet Valve Control Circuit/Open

What it means

The drive circuit for the turbocharger compressor outlet valve (also called diverter valve or blow-off valve) is open. The valve releases boost pressure when the throttle closes to prevent compressor surge.

At a glance

  • Usually lights the check-engine light

How it works

The compressor outlet valve, also called a diverter valve, releases boost pressure when the throttle closes so the turbocharger compressor does not surge. The control module monitors the valve's drive circuit, and this code sets when it detects an open electrical path, such as an open solenoid winding or broken connection.

Common causes

Most likely first.

  1. Solenoid winding open
  2. Pin pushed back out of connector body
  3. Cracked solder joint inside the module or sensor

Symptoms

  • Check engine light on
  • Reduced engine power or poor acceleration
  • Delayed or inconsistent boost response

How to diagnose it

  1. Save freeze-frame data and check for related turbocharger or valve codes before clearing anything.
  2. Inspect the compressor outlet valve connector for a pin pushed back, corrosion, or a loose connection.
  3. Trace the valve wiring for breaks, damage, or a poor connection between the valve and control module.
  4. Measure the valve winding and circuit continuity using the manufacturer's procedure to locate an open.
  5. If the wiring and winding pass, check the control module connector and its output using the specified test.

Common fixes

  • Reseat a backed-out connector pin and secure the connector.
  • Repair a broken wire or poor connection in the valve circuit.
  • Replace the compressor outlet valve if its winding is open.
  • Repair a confirmed open connection at the module.

Can I keep driving?

A short, gentle drive may be possible if power and boost response remain predictable, but avoid hard acceleration and heavy loads. Poor boost response can make merging or overtaking less predictable; stop if the engine behaves abnormally.

A code shows where the control module detected a fault, not always which part failed. Check the causes in order and confirm with a test before replacing parts. Have several codes? Check them together

This is a generic code: it means the same on every make. The car’s maker may add more detail in its own service information.
