OBD-II fault code

P22C2: O2 Sensor Pumping Current Trim Circuit/Open (Bank 2 Sensor 2)

What it means

The pumping current trim line on bank 2 sensor 2 is open. The trim is the per-sensor calibration code that adjusts pumping current to compensate for production tolerances.

At a glance

  • Usually lights the check-engine light
  • Affects emissions; the car can fail an emissions test

How it works

The wide-band oxygen sensor after the Bank 2 catalytic converter has a pumping-current trim line carrying its individual calibration information. The engine control module sets P22C2 when it detects an open in the Bank 2 Sensor 2 trim circuit, so it may not be able to apply that sensor's calibration correctly.

Common causes

Most likely first.

  1. Open trim line
  2. Pin pushed back out of connector body
  3. Cracked solder joint inside the module or sensor

Symptoms

  • Check engine light on
  • Increased fuel consumption
  • Possible rough idle or hesitation
  • Failed emissions test

How to diagnose it

  1. Record freeze-frame data and check Bank 2 Sensor 2 live data and related codes to confirm the trim-circuit fault.
  2. Inspect the Bank 2 Sensor 2 connector for a pushed-back trim pin, corrosion, looseness, or heat damage.
  3. Trace the trim wire for an open or chafing between the sensor and the control module, paying attention to the harness near the exhaust.
  4. With components isolated as directed by service information, test trim-wire continuity and terminal contact against the manufacturer's specification.
  5. If the external circuit is intact, use the manufacturer's diagnostic procedure to distinguish a sensor-internal trim fault from a module fault.

Common fixes

  • Repair a broken or chafed Bank 2 Sensor 2 trim wire.
  • Reseat or replace a pushed-back terminal and clean corroded connector contacts.
  • Replace the Bank 2 Sensor 2 oxygen sensor if its internal trim circuit is confirmed open.
  • Repair the control module only if testing confirms an internal module fault.

Can I keep driving?

You can usually drive cautiously if the engine runs normally, but incorrect sensor calibration may affect emissions monitoring and fuel use. Arrange diagnosis soon, particularly before an emissions test.

A code shows where the control module detected a fault, not always which part failed. Check the causes in order and confirm with a test before replacing parts. Have several codes? Check them together

This is a generic code: it means the same on every make. The car’s maker may add more detail in its own service information.
