OBD-II fault code

P2627: O2 Sensor Pumping Current Trim Circuit Low (Bank 1 Sensor 1)

What it means

The oxygen sensor pumping current trim circuit for bank 1 sensor 1 is below the expected level.

At a glance

  • Usually lights the check-engine light
  • Affects emissions; the car can fail an emissions test

How it works

Bank 1 sensor 1 is the upstream oxygen or air-fuel sensor on the side of the engine containing cylinder 1. Its pumping-current trim circuit supports accurate mixture measurement; P2627 means the module detects a trim-circuit level below the expected range, often from a shorted trim element or a connector fault. This can impair fuel correction on bank 1.

Common causes

Most likely first.

  1. Short in the calibration trim resistor
  2. Water intrusion in the sensor connector
  3. Connector pins corroded - high contact resistance

Symptoms

  • Check engine light on
  • Increased fuel consumption
  • Possible rough idle or hesitation
  • Failed emissions test

How to diagnose it

  1. Capture freeze-frame data and compare bank 1 sensor 1 readings and fuel trims with the other bank, if available.
  2. Inspect the bank 1 sensor 1 connector for water intrusion, corrosion, and damaged seals, and check the nearby harness for chafing.
  3. Check terminal fit and look for corrosion or contamination that could affect the trim-circuit connection.
  4. Use the wiring diagram to test the trim circuit for a short or abnormal resistance, separating the sensor from the harness during checks.
  5. Test the sensor's internal trim circuit against the manufacturer's specification to determine whether the trim element is shorted.
  6. Clear the code after repairs and verify that bank 1 sensor 1 data and fuel trims operate normally.

Common fixes

  • Dry and reseal the bank 1 sensor 1 connector if moisture is present.
  • Clean or replace corroded connector terminals.
  • Repair chafed wiring or a short in the trim circuit.
  • Replace bank 1 sensor 1 if its internal trim circuit is outside the manufacturer's specification.

Can I keep driving?

A short trip is generally possible if the engine runs smoothly, but poor mixture correction can increase fuel use and emissions and may cause hesitation. Arrange diagnosis soon, especially before an emissions test.

A code shows where the control module detected a fault, not always which part failed. Check the causes in order and confirm with a test before replacing parts. Have several codes? Check them together

This is a generic code: it means the same on every make. The car’s maker may add more detail in its own service information.
