What it means
The negative (sinking) side of the O2 sensor pumping current control circuit on bank 2 sensor 2 is open.
At a glance
- Usually lights the check-engine light
- Affects emissions; the car can fail an emissions test
How it works
The wide-band oxygen sensor after the Bank 2 catalytic converter uses a negative-current control line as the sinking side of its pumping-current circuit. The engine control module sets P22BF when it detects an open in the Bank 2 Sensor 2 negative-current path, which can prevent correct sensor operation.
Common causes
Most likely first.
- Open negative current line
- Pin pushed back out of connector body
- Cracked solder joint inside the module or sensor
Symptoms
- Check engine light on
- Increased fuel consumption
- Possible rough idle or hesitation
- Failed emissions test
How to diagnose it
- Record freeze-frame data and check Bank 2 Sensor 2 live data and related codes to confirm the negative-current circuit fault.
- Inspect the sensor connector for a loose or pushed-back negative-current pin, corrosion, and heat damage.
- Trace the negative-current wire between Bank 2 Sensor 2 and the control module for breaks, chafing, or exhaust-related damage.
- With power off and components isolated as directed by service information, test the negative-current wire for continuity and connector contact against the manufacturer's specification.
- If the harness is intact, use the manufacturer's procedure to test the sensor's internal circuit and the module connection.
Common fixes
- Repair a broken or chafed Bank 2 Sensor 2 negative-current wire.
- Reseat or replace a loose or pushed-back terminal and clean corroded contacts.
- Replace the Bank 2 Sensor 2 oxygen sensor if its negative-current path is confirmed open internally.
- Repair the control module only if its internal circuit fault is verified.
Can I keep driving?
You can usually drive cautiously if the engine runs normally, but the sensor may not report exhaust oxygen accurately and emissions readiness may be affected. Avoid extended driving if rough running or hesitation appears.
A code shows where the control module detected a fault, not always which part failed. Check the causes in order and confirm with a test before replacing parts. Have several codes? Check them together
This is a generic code: it means the same on every make. The car’s maker may add more detail in its own service information.
